Grandfather Rights are Ending, Are you Ready?

July 01, 2024 | By: Victoria Makepeace

All cards issued under Industry Accreditation or Grandfather Rights will expire on December 31, 2024. If you have not completed your relevant qualification by this time, you may be denied access to a site.

If you hold a CSCS Card with the relevant NVQ, your card will remain valid until the expiry date. However, if your card was issued under Industry Accreditation or Grandfather Rights, you will not be able to renew it without completing a relevant qualification.

Do you need to complete an NVQ to continue working in construction

Basically, the answer is yes. All construction professionals previously relying on Grandfather Rights must complete an NVQ or equivalent accredited qualification to keep their CSCS and CPCS cards and continue working in the industry.

Understanding the changes

The Construction Skills Certification Scheme (CSCS) and the Construction Plant Competence Scheme (CPCS) have implemented these changes to ensure that all workers in the industry have the necessary skills and qualifications to maintain high safety and competency standards.

This move aims to phase out older, less rigorous certification routes and bring everyone up to a consistent standard.

Steps to Take:

  1. Assess Your Current Situation:
    • Check the expiration date of your current card.
    • Determine whether your card was issued under Industry Accreditation or Grandfather Rights.
  1. Identify the Relevant Qualification:
    • Research which NVQ or equivalent qualification you need for your role.
    • Contact a training provider to get details on the courses and assessments required.
  1. Enrol in a Qualification Program:
    • Find an accredited provider offering the NVQ or equivalent qualification you need.
    • Enrol in the course and plan your study and assessment schedule.
  1. Complete the Qualification:
    • Attend necessary training sessions and complete all assessments.
    • Submit required documentation and await confirmation of your qualification.
  1. Renew Your Card:
    • Once you have obtained your NVQ or equivalent qualification, apply to renew your CSCS or CPCS card.
    • Ensure all your details are up-to-date and submit your application before your current card expires.

Benefits of the New Qualification Standards

  • Improved Safety: Workers with up-to-date qualifications are better equipped to handle the challenges of modern construction sites, leading to fewer accidents and injuries.
  • Enhanced Skills: The new standards ensure that all workers have current knowledge and skills, making the workforce more competent and efficient.
  • Professional Development: Completing a new qualification can open up further career opportunities and progression within the industry.

Conclusion

The end of Grandfather Rights marks a significant shift towards a more qualified and skilled construction workforce. By completing the necessary NVQ or equivalent qualifications, construction professionals can ensure they remain compliant, improve their skills, and continue working in the industry without interruption.
